BabyJail is a visual campaign to expose the school-to-prison pipeline and enable people to fight against it.
I used Design Thinking to break down the overwhelming subject of systemic racism into smaller issues that can we can tackle as individuals.
Visual Communication is a key player in my design because impactful imagery is a proven effective tool for education and social change.
I made this one-minute teaser to quickly introduce people to these key facts:
the media hides the prison-industrial complex from public view
black people do not yet have freedom in the US
the systematic targeting of people of color begins when they are school children
Cartoons are an eye-catching teaching tool because they can fit a lot of information into a short chunk of time, are easy to watch more than once, and can be shared across virtually any social or digital media platform. BabyJail uses them to spread the truth about systemic racism and the school-to-prison pipeline to the masses.
2. avis
a transformative light fixture for conference rooms
The prompt: choose a space and design a light fixture for it, using LEDs and edge lighting, for Hubbell Lighting Inc.
My group of four people chose a conference room in the Design Science, Philadelphia office because of its modern yet natural theme.
We designed AVIS for this space because its birdlike wings can be repositioned to distribute different amounts of light to the table below, depending on the user’s needs. AVIS is modular, so we also designed a book full of orientation ideas for hanging multiple units.
3. blockponic
a modular, indoor growing system
The prompt: “work and play in the backyard.”
I focused on people who are stuck inside, and wanted to bring the outdoors to them.
After looking into the health benefits we get from being outside, I decided to design a small, self-contained, hydroponic planter. I grew wheatgrass in my prototype because it is a robust, easy-to-grow plant that is also rich in nutrients and a great smoothie ingredient, and its bright green blades supplied a bonus mental boost.
Design Development and CAD helped me find the right form to practically encapsulate an outdoor experience in a small plastic object that can grow just like its inhabitants.
4. the toss up
task manager, game accessory
The prompt: Design, market, manufacture and sell a $7 product.
The Toss Up is an 8-sided chalk board that can be used to delegate tasks, make a decision, or enhance game play.
